The Four As to Practice Empathy with Your Teen

Here are some specific principles to help you practice empathic behaviors with your teen: ask, accept, appreciate verbally your teen’s struggle, and ask directly what you can do to help your teen in that moment. You can easily remember these behaviors by memorizing them as the four As.

Ask curious questions about the difficulties your teen is going through. Ask questions about her thoughts, emotions, fears, or wishes about the situation. Curious questions are usually open-ended questions that require a response instead of monosyllabic answers such as “yes” or “no”; open-ended questions include “why,” “where,” “what,” “who,” or “how.” Ask questions along the lines of “What makes it so hard right now?” “What would make it worse?” “How would it be if you could make it the way you want it to be?” “Can you tell me more about X?”
